Training Today, The Engineers of The Future

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) is the statutory organisation, national training provider and awarding body with responsibility for the training and development of the UK’s engineering construction workforce. Acting on behalf of the industry, the ECITB works closely with Government and employers to attract, develop and qualify engineering construction personnel in hundreds of skills and disciplines. We provide businesses with the means to train the engineers of today and tomorrow to the highest standards, via our extensive, regionally-based network of almost 200 specialist ECITB- accredited course providers.

Managing a national skills training fund, the ECITB invests £20 million each year in providing the advice, information and support engineering construction employers need to attract, develop and qualify the people they need to create a sustainable and competitive workforce. This includes financial grants to cover the cost of training. The ECITB also sets industry standards for competence and health & safety, and works with all stakeholders to build a sustainable and competitive workforce for the future.

What we do

UK trained personnel are responsible for pioneering technology and leading innovation and quality and the ECITB is responsible for equipping and developing the personnel capabilities that drive this success.

Over the next 5 years, the ECITB will invest £100 million and work closely with industry stakeholders, the Government and training providers to ensure standards of excellence, with a commitment to three core objectives:

Attract talented newcomers
Each year the ECITB showcases the challenges and excitement offered by a career in engineering construction at schools, colleges, universities and other walks of life to introduce new recruits to the industry.

Develop skills
ECITB trains in all aspects and levels of disciplines from craft and technical apprenticeships, management and professional improvement, to Chartered Engineer status.

Qualify the workforce
The ECITB sets industry standards for competence, health and safety. It is the Awarding Body for diplomas and vocational qualifications in England, Scotland and Wales (NVQs and SVQs) for the engineering construction industry.

Who we work with

The ECITB represents the engineering construction industry at the highest levels, working with the Government and other industry, trade and academic organisations to build the workforce skills and knowledge necessary to secure the future of UK engineering construction.

Organisations we work with include:  companies such as such as Aker Kvaerner, Foster Wheeler, AMEC and Alstom; the Sector Skills Councils, Cogent (the Sector Skills Council for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, nuclear, oil & gas, petroleum & polymers); EU Skills (the Sector Skills Council for the gas, power, waste management and water industries); and The National Skills Academy for Nuclear; OPITO (the UK Oil and Gas Academy); the professional engineering institutions and universities.

The ECITB training network incorporates almost 200 accredited course providers with an investment of £20 million in 2009 alone.

How we work

The ECITB is a registered charity, funded by income raised from engineering construction companies.
The ECITB works closely with the industry and the Government, and is employer led, managed by a Main Board, supported by a Management Board and 9 Regions, each with its own chair and account management team.

Our Equality Statement

The ECITB values the diverse nature of its staff, stakeholders, and those who use its products and services.

The ECITB’s commitment to equality is expressed by key policies such as: Equal Opportunities, and Dignity at Work.  Moreover, we are committed to promoting an equitable and respectful business culture whereby people are valued regardless of their ethnic background, gender, disability or any other irrelevant personal characteristic, and advancement and recognition is available to all, based on business-related objective criteria.
