Welcome to Wales & South West Region 2016

2016 promises to be a busy year for the Engineering construction industry in Wales & South West England and for the ECITB regional team.

Challenging targets have been set for the region in 2016 including

  • 3,484 learners to receive skills & technical training
  • 4,867  learners to receive management & professional training
  • 35 apprentice pledges
  • Commitment to fund training for at least 189  learners through the regional discretionary grant

Past performance suggests that the figures recorded above are achievable. This is a clear indication to me that even whilst the economy is recovering the regional engineering construction and nuclear industries continue to recognise the advantages of having a highly trained and skilled workforce.

Over the coming years there are a number of major infrastructure projects planned for construction in the region including:

  • Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station
  • Wylfa Newydd Nuclear Power Station
  • Swansea Tidal Lagoon

The ECITB team are already working hard to make sure that the region has both strategic and operational representation on these projects in order to assist with the establishment of the necessary skills base. Similarly the team are working on the development of nuclear supply chain capability for its regional contractors.

The team will as usual be busy this year spreading the word on the great career opportunities that exist within the engineering construction industry by attending careers events including Careers Wales in Llanelli.

Carmanthenshire Careers Convention, Llanelli

On Tuesday 10th March ECITB attended the Carmanthenshire Careers Convention, based in Parc Y Scarlets Rugby Ground, Llanelli.

The event was very successful with over 1,576 pupils attending from 13 schools.  Attendees consisted of year 10 students considering their career options.  The pupils are fortunate to be within catchment area of Swansea Tidal Lagoon and there was a significant level of interest in ECITB apprenticeships.
